RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Ocean Shorebased (Theory), Sights & Oral Exam

This course covers Celestial Navigation, Passage Planning and Meteorology. It assumes knowledge of coastal & offshore sailing plus navigation to Yachtmaster Offshore Shore based standard.
  • Pre-requisites: Hold a RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence. Completed as Skipper/Mate, a Qualified Passage, involving full Planning of a non-stop 600 miles, 4 Day Passage at least 50 miles from land. Hold a First Aid Qualification.
  • Minimum age: 18 Years
  • Where: Langebaan & out to sea
  • Duration: 5 days theory, 2/3 day sights + oral 1 Days
RYA Ocean Theory | 5 days

This is a course in astro navigation and worldwide meteorology which also reveals the mysteries of the sextant. It assumes a sound knowledge of all subjects covered in the RYA Day Skipper + RYA Coastal Skipper & Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased courses.

RYA Ocean Sights | 2/3 days

  • Sail out so that no land marks are seen as this is a pre-requisite from RYA
  • Sights to be taken 2 – 3 hours apart

Examination (Pre-booked with External Examiner ~ arranged by Atlantic Yachting)

Oral

  • A narrative account of the planning and execution of the qualifying passage
  • Navigational records, completed on board a yacht on passage, out of sight of land, showing that the candidate has navigated the yacht without the use of electronic navigational aids.
  • The record must include a minimum of:
    • planning, reduction and plotting of a sun-run meridian altitude sight
    • a compass check carried out using the bearing of the sun, moon, a star or a planet.

During the oral test the candidate may be required to answer questions on all aspects of ocean passage making in a yacht, including passage planning, navigation, worldwide meteorology, crew management and yacht preparation, maintenance and repairs.

Written – Not required if you have an Ocean Course Completion Certificate

  • ID/Passport Photo’s x 2
  • Stationery: 2 x 2B pencils, eraser, examination pad/notebook
  • Suitable comfortable clothing
  • Sleeping bag and a blanket
  • Towels and toiletries
  • Warm socks and a beanie
  • Extra money for food and beverages
